Free Pattern - Crochet bolero

Newsflash! I thought this was free from errors. I was wrong. Oh, so wrong! Anyway, many thanks to Peg for very nicely pointing this out to me. The pattern is now amended, the link has been altered, everything in the garden is lovely. If you have already downloaded the incorrect pattern then I am really sorry. And if you find any more errors in the new version, then feel free to beat me around the head until I agree to find some pattern testers for the next one.

This must be a record! In my last post I promised a crochet bolero pattern and, not a fortnight later, here it is - free pattern for a little girl's crochet bolero! I feel quite giddy with smuggery.
You can either get it from Google Docs at the above link or, if that doesn't work, then I've cut & pasted it into a new Blogger posting at http://lespetitsanglais.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/crochet-bolero-pattern.html .

At Christmas I needed something to go over Laura's party dress(es!). There were numerous free patterns available for shrugs, but I couldn't find one for a bolero. So, being far too cheap to part with cash, I set to and created this one. I was in a hurry at the time so I used an edging from my Harmony Guide. Obviously, I can't include that one in my pattern because of copyright and all, so I've come up with a somewhat simpler one.

On the downside, this is not the most professional looking pattern you will ever see. I had to do a chart for the fronts because I got so entangled in turning chains and trebles and double crochets, and I even made a mistake in the chart. Otherwise, I think it's free from errors, and the resulting bolero is well worth wading through the pattern! It's actually a very easy bolero to make, and also easy enough to size up or down because of the small pattern repeat. American readers please bear in mind that it is written using British terminology, so read single crochet for double crochet, and double crochet for treble.

I hope you enjoy the pattern.

I love this! I'm only fair at crocheting and I've never learned how to read a pattern. This darling bolero might just be the item that tempts me into actually trying to read a pattern. Beautiful!

Help, what am I doing wrong as in back instructions it says 88 chains which should make 11 pattern repeats, mine makes 14.5 repeats and it would fit myself,as my pattern repeats work out at 1.5 or more inches and I am a tight crocheter!

Hi Anonymous! Each pattern repeat consists of 8 stitches, so 88 chains should make 11 repeats. The pattern should form an upside-down triangle - which you can see in the charts for the front. What yarn are you using? And what hook? Could you upload some pictures of your work to my Facebook fan pae so I can see what your doing and help you?

Thanks for getting back, I realised 8 stitches are a repeat but it is the length of the chain that floored me so I will get back to it and take it stitch by stitch and see where I went wrong, I will get back on facebook .
Thanks aagain

I can not download your pattern. It says there is a problem with your page. Would you have any idea why?

Hi Ascullard. I've spent some time today altering the pattern so if you tried to access it during the time when I had deleted the original and not yet replaced the link with the new version then there would have been a problem with the page. Could you try again and let me know if there's still a problem? Thanks!

So am I to understand this correctly that where you have written to do treble stitches through out the pattern I should actually be doing a double stitch?

Hi Karen, the pattern is English rather than US so yes, our trebles are the same as your double crochets.

i have tried numerous times to print the bolero pattern. Nothing happens.

I am still trying to print that free bolero pattern. I'll try once again tomorrow and if I'm unable to do so, never to return to your site again.
i've already tried 6 times.

I'm sorry about that anonymous. Have you tried downloading it first? I wasn't able to print it direct from google docs but it should print once downloaded. I'm at work at the moment but if it still doesn't work for you i'll check it out when I get home.

I used an american mercerized Aunt Lydia's 'crochet string'. I adapted it to a US size 8. Of course, the thin string, and longer american stitches this turned it into a much larger project ;-), but the look is beautiful. We made it as a 'shrug' and the full sleeves hang as if it is almost a poncho.

The link to your pattern does not open to a pattern. Do you have a PDF you can send me? Thanks.

Hi Anonymous, I don't know why the link doesn't work for you. I checked it just now and it took me to Google Docs and the pattern. But I'll happily email you the pdf if you let me have the address. Meredith, that souns gorgeous! I love the sound of the sleeves!

"Hi Karen, the pattern is English rather than US so yes, our trebles are the same as your double crochets."
I am a little confused - this pattern has trebles through the 'main' patterns, and doubles around the sleeves - are these all doubles or are the trebles actually doubles and the doubles actually single crochets?

Hi! Can you tell me if you made the dress? I love it and it would be sooo cute on my granddaughter. If so would you share a pattern link or name?
Thanks in advance!
Jackie
